Bell MTS Fibe Network - battery backup FAQs

What is the Bell MTS Fibe® Network?

This next generation network supplies a huge amount of bandwidth into the home providing customers with higher quality Home Phone, High Speed Internet and TV services, now and in the future. The Bell MTS Fibe Network also enabled Bell MTS home services to work together seamlessly as additional bandwidth is available to meet our customer's evolving needs.

What is an Optical Network Terminal (ONT)?

An Optical Network Terminal, or ONT, is a device used to connect the Bell MTS Fibe Network to the existing wiring inside your home.

What is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

An Uninterruptible Power Supply, or UPS, is a unit that provides backup power to the ONT to ensure that Bell MTS Home Phone service continues to work in the event of a power outage.

Where do I find my UPS?

Your UPS will usually be installed in the basement of your home or with the other utility connections in a utility room, storage room or laundry room.

Where do I find my battery?

Your battery is located inside your UPS unit.

How do I know if my battery is dead?

The REPLACE BATTERY indicator light will be solid. Please see How to Monitor Your Battery Backup System section for your particular UPS for further details. Some, but not all, batteries have an audible beep when dead.

Is there a way to know if my battery is low?

The BATTERY POWER indicator light will flash when the battery is getting low. Some, but not all, batteries have an audible beep when low.

Why do I need a battery backup system?

The system backs up the ONT to ensure that your Bell MTS Home Phone service continues to work in the event of a power outage.

Do I need to monitor/replace my battery?

Yes, Bell MTS customers are responsible for monitoring and replacing their battery as needed. If you have Bell MTS Home Phone service, use at least one corded phone in your home, and do not have a wireless (cell) phone, we encourage you to monitor your battery backup system and replace your battery as required to ensure that your Home Phone service continues to work in the event of a power outage.

If you do not have Bell MTS Home Phone service, you do not need to monitor your battery backup system. (TV and Internet service will not work in the event of a power outage, regardless of the status of your battery backup system.)

If you have Bell MTS Home Phone service, but use only cordless telephones in your home, you may decide not to monitor your battery backup system. (Cordless phones will not work in a power outage, regardless of the status of your battery backup system.)

Rest assured that your wireless phone will work during a power outage.

Where do I get a battery?

If your battery has a manufacturer's warranty sticker, please contact the battery manufacturer using the phone number or website provided on the sticker for directions on receiving a replacement battery.

Alternatively, you can obtain a battery from a participating battery retailer or hardware store. To determine what battery you require, refer to the "What are my battery specifications" in the section below.

I received a Bell MTS sticker for my UPS; where should I place this sticker?

You should place the Bell MTS sticker on the front of your UPS. Please follow the suggested sticker placement for your particular UPS:

How long will my battery last?

Your battery should last between 3-8 years; however, if the battery backup system is used (e.g. in a power outage), this will deplete the lifetime of the battery. We recommend that you monitor your battery every 3-6 months.

Can I unplug my UPS?

You should not unplug your UPS. If you unplug your UPS, the Bell MTS services in your home will be disconnected.

My battery is beeping. What should I do?

You can replace your battery to stop the beeping. Please see How to Monitor Your Battery Backup System/Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Unit for further details.

If you choose not to replace your battery, you can simply remove it to stop the beeping.
