Troubleshooting your Wi-Fi Network
If you are experiencing problems with your Wi-Fi network, start by looking at how well each of your devices connects to your home network. The Bell Wi-Fi app monitors your network to give you a connection quality rating for each device, and to show you when there is a problem.
To view your device connection quality:
- Open the Bell Wi-Fi app and log in with your Bell MTS MyAccount username and password.
- Touch Devices at the bottom of the home screen.
- Select the device you want to troubleshoot. The connection quality rating will appear under the device name, along with what channel it's on and which Wi-Fi pod or modem it's connected to.
Quality ratings:
- Excellent – All applications should run properly.
- Good – All applications should run without major impairments. You may see some buffering for high-speed applications, like 4K video streaming.
- Fair – Not ideal for real-time applications or high throughput applications, like 4K video streaming.
- Poor – Your device is not communicating well with the network. Real-time applications such as video calling or streaming may suffer.
Channels:
- 2.4 GHz – 2.4 GHz channels are slower than 5 GHz but have more range.
- 5 GHz – 5 GHz channels are faster than 2.4 GHz but have less range.
Less than excellent connection quality can be caused by many things, such as how far the device is from the modem, interference, what channel it’s using, or the speed tier of your Internet package.
To improve your connection quality rating, try:
- Toggling your device's Wi-Fi off and on –– This will reconnect the device to the network and let it choose to the best channel.
- Rebooting your device – This will reset the device’s connection to the network and let it choose the best channel.
- Moving the device closer to the modem or away from anything that may cause interference (e.g. metal appliances, other devices, etc.)
- Rebooting your modem
Try these steps one by one, checking the connection quality after each attempt until you see an improvement. The connection quality rating should refresh every minute.
